Let’s Strengthen and Develop a Perinatal Workforce To Mitigate Maternal & Infant Mortality in The USA
We are dedicated to creating and empowering a robust perinatal workforce which can address the fact that America lags far behind other developed nations when it comes to maternal and infant mortality. Our birth outcomes are unconscionable and are now worsening as the numbers of mothers lost, or nearly-lost, during pregnancy birth and postpartum are rising.
For mothers, the US 2018 maternal mortality rate was 20.7 per 100,000 births, with approximately 50, 000 near-miss events. The gap between races, however, continues to be stark with Black/African American women and Native American women dying at 3- 4 times the rate of white or Hispanic women.
For babies, the number of infant deaths (before age 1) in 2018 was 5.9 per 1,000 live births, demonstrating a long-awaited drop in infant mortality. Unfortunately the USA still ranks worse among developed nations for infant deaths and again the racial disparity, particularly for black babies, is on average twice as high as it is for white babies.

We consider our perinatal providers to be protective agents who are prepared to advocate strongly for women and families where necessary, recognizing their inherent dignity and supporting their empowerment in order to save lives. Our belief is that certified perinatal professionals are the sentinels of safe birth outcomes in situations where safety is not afforded or guaranteed due to race class, gender, sexual orientation, disability or any other type of marginalization.
